GEORGIA DEPARTMENT OF LABOR

Georgia Labor Commissioner Mark Butler said Thursday that Rome posted a mixed month in April even as the state saw generally down numbers for several cities.

In Rome, the April unemployment rate fell and jobs continued to climb. Those positive trends were somewhat offset by drops in the labor force and employed residents. Unemployment claims also declined.

“Even though we did see some fluctuations in the employment and workforce numbers across the state, job growth continues to be very strong,” Butler said.

Rome added 200 jobs in April, pushing its total to 41,500. That was an increase of 400 over last April. Just three metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs) grew by 1,000 jobs or more in April.

The unemployment rate dropped by 0.4 percent to 3.8 percent. It was 4.9 percent last April. Rome ranked ninth among Georgia’s 14 MSAs.

Bartow County’s unemployment rate was 3.5% in April, down from 3.9% in March and 4.4% in April of 2017.

The jobless rate in Gordon County was 3.6% last month, down from 4% in March and 4.5% this time last year.

Chattooga County saw the same trend. 3.5% in April, 4% in March and 4.5% this time last year.

Polk County’s unemployment rate checked in at 3.9%, which is down from 4.3% the month before and down from 5.2% over the year.

Rome did not escape April without posting any negative numbers.

The number of employed dropped by 57 in April. That change ranked seventh among 14 MSAs. At 43,106 total employed residents, Rome was up by 1,152 for the year.

Only one MSA, Brunswick, added to its workforce during the month. The labor force in Rome fell by 268 to 44,809 in April. It was up by nearly 700 over the same period a year ago.

Initial claims for unemployment also fell by 28 percent for the month and by 42 percent from last year. Six of the 14 MSAs saw claims rise in April.

The metropolitan statistical area includes just Floyd County.

Employ Georgia, the GDOL’s online job listing service at employgeorgia.com showed 296 new active job postings in metro Rome for April.
