According to a report released yesterday by the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office, a Trion man called deputies after his caregivers stole his car and window air conditioning units from his home on Elm Street in Trion.
Henry Shelby told deputies that he had to have his foot amputated, and before he could go home, the hospital required that he have in-home care. Mr. Shelby enlisted the help of a couple in LaFayette to provide in-home care. Mr. Shelby gave the couple the keys to his house and his car while he was still in the hospital. Mr. Shelby says that before he returned home, the couple had stolen two window air conditioning units, a car battery, and an air compressor.
When Mr. Shelby got out of the hospital, the couple took him to their home in LaFayette, but when Mr. Shelby got there, he found out that the couple didn’t have power at their residence. Mr. Shelby returned to his house in Trion and the woman who was supposed to be his caregiver returned with him. Later, the woman’s partner rode his bicycle from Lafayette to Trion to Mr. Shelby’s house. The woman took her partner back to LaFayette and didn’t return with Mr. Shelby’s car.
According to the report, the car was later returned, but Mr. Shelby’s property is still missing.
The case is being investigated by the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office.
